Water Heater Failure Floods Home in Apple Valley?

4/2/2024 (Permalink)

A person adjusts the T&P safety relief valve on a water heater. We restore water damage 24 hours a day in San Bernardino County.

It was the pressure relief valve?

Our local Hesperia/Apple Valley and Barstow/Twentynine Palms, Victorville teams are trusted leaders in water damage restoration services. Water heaters can break down and cause water damage for several reasons, one common cause is a malfunctioning pressure relief valve.

A pressure relief valve plays a vital role in maintaining safe operating conditions within a water heater by releasing excess pressure that builds up inside the tank. When a water heater operates, water inside the tank heats up, expanding and increasing pressure. If the pressure exceeds safe levels due to overheating or a malfunctioning thermostat, the pressure relief valve should automatically open to release the excess pressure. However, if the valve is faulty or stuck, it may fail to open or close properly, leading to an imbalance in pressure regulation.

As a result, the water heater may experience excessive pressure buildup, causing strain on the tank and its components. Over time, this can lead to leaks, ruptures, or even tank explosions in extreme cases.

Regular inspection and maintenance of the pressure relief valve are essential to ensure it functions correctly. If any signs of malfunction are detected, such as water dripping from the valve or irregular pressure readings, immediate replacement or repair is necessary to prevent potential water heater damage and leaks.

Atmospheric River Causes Water Damage in Hesperia?

3/26/2024 (Permalink)

Raindrops and condensation obscure the view from a window. We restore storm damage in San Bernardino County 24 hours a day.

Our local Hesperia/Apple Valley and Barstow/Twentynine Palms, Victorville teams are trusted leaders in water damage restoration services. The heavy rain we have sustained this year has been attributed to a phenomenon known as atmospheric rivers. An atmospheric river is a long, narrow corridor or channel of concentrated moisture in the Earth's atmosphere. Some key characteristics of atmospheric rivers include:

High Water Vapor Content: These narrow bands of the atmosphere can contain a significant amount of water vapor, often rivaling the water flow in some of the world's largest rivers.

Moisture Transport: Atmospheric rivers play a crucial role in the Earth's water cycle by transporting moisture across vast distances, which can lead to heavy rainfall and snowfall when they make landfall.

Weather Impacts: When an atmospheric river encounters land, it can result in intense precipitation events, potentially leading to flooding, landslides, and other weather-related hazards.

Seasonal Variability: Atmospheric rivers are more common during certain seasons, such as the winter months in the western United States, when they contribute to heavy rainfall and snowfall events known as "Pineapple Express" in the Pacific Northwest.

Importance for Water Resources: In regions prone to drought, atmospheric rivers can be a significant source of replenishment for water resources, such as reservoirs and groundwater.

Our local Hesperia/Apple Valley and Barstow/Twentynine Palms, Victorville teams are leaders in water damage restoration services. Visible Corrosion:  Examine exposed pipes for any signs of corrosion, especially if they are metal. Corrosion can weaken pipes and lead to leaks over time.

Leaks or Drips: Look for any obvious leaks, drips, or water stains around pipes, joints, or connections. Even minor drips can indicate a problem.

Discoloration: Check for discoloration or rust on pipes, which may indicate corrosion and potential weakness.

Bulging or Swelling: If you notice any pipes that appear bulging or swollen, it could be a sign of internal pressure buildup or damage.

Water Pressure Changes: Sudden drops in water pressure can indicate a pipe leak or blockage in the plumbing system.

Puddles or Moisture: Inspect areas around pipes, such as under sinks, around water heaters, or in basements, for puddles, moisture, or dampness that might indicate an active or past leak.

Noises: Listen for unusual sounds like hissing, gurgling, or knocking, which may indicate a plumbing issue.

Broken Pipe in Helendale Home Causes Water Damage?

1/3/2024 (Permalink)

A water-damaged wall reveals burst pipes. We respond to water damage emergencies 24 hours a day in San Bernardino County.

Our local Hesperia/Apple Valley and Barstow/Twentynine Palms, Victorville teams respond to water damage emergencies throughout the year in Helendale. Broken pipes are a common cause of water damage, and fast action is critical to minimizing the potential for secondary damage and more time-consuming and costly repairs. Water can cause significant damage to wood floors when the water is left standing and allowed to penetrate the wood. Here are some examples of potential damage:

Warping and Buckling: Wood is a porous material, and when it absorbs water, it can expand. This expansion can cause the wood planks to warp or buckle, creating uneven surfaces and an unsightly appearance. It may also make the floor unsafe to walk on.

Swelling: The individual wood fibers in the planks can swell when exposed to moisture, causing them to push against each other. This can lead to gaps between the planks, and in severe cases, the wood may crack or split.

Discoloration: Water can cause wood to stain or become discolored. Dark spots or patches may appear on the surface of the wood, and the finish can become cloudy or damaged.

Mold and Mildew Growth: Standing water can create a moist environment that is conducive to the growth of mold and mildew.

Clogged Storm Drains Leads to Flooding in Victorville Home?

12/19/2023 (Permalink)

A storm drain is clogged, allowing rainwater to flood a street. We restore storm damage 24 hours a day in San Bernardino County.

Our local Hesperia/Apple Valley and Barstow/Twentynine Palms, Victorville teams are leaders in storm damage restoration services. Victorville residents rely on us to mitigate and restore storm damage quickly and efficiently. One common cause of water intrusion is clogged storm drains. Storm drains are designed to channel rainwater away from streets and urban areas, preventing it from pooling on roads and causing flooding. When these drains become obstructed, several problems arise.

The primary function of storm drains is to collect rainwater and direct it towards drainage systems or natural water bodies like rivers and streams. When clogs form, rainwater cannot flow freely into the drains. Instead, it accumulates on streets and roads, forming puddles that can quickly turn into larger bodies of standing water.

Clogged storm drains can lead to overflows. As rainwater cannot enter the drains efficiently, it can overwhelm the drainage system's capacity, causing water to spill onto streets and low-lying areas. This excess water contributes to flooding as it has nowhere to go.

Clogs can exacerbate localized flooding. When water backs up behind a clogged drain, it can flow into nearby buildings and properties, causing damage to homes and infrastructure. To prevent clogged storm drains and ensure the effective functioning of stormwater management systems, it is crucial to maintain and clear storm drains regularly.

He communicated very professionally and made sure we understood what he and his crew were working on. Philip the floor installer was also very personable and attentive to detail when laying the floor. Hesperia Water Damage Restoration: The Ultimate Guide

10/9/2023 (Permalink)

A washing machine in a flooded room We are leaders in storm damage restoration services in San Bernardino County.

In Hesperia, California, the risk of water damage is a constant concern, whether from heavy rains, burst pipes, or unforeseen disasters. It's vital to be prepared and knowledgeable about what to do after a flood. In this comprehensive guide, we'll provide step-by-step instructions for Hesperia homeowners to address water damage effectively, along with crucial insights on when it's essential to call in professionals like SERVPRO for assistance.

Step 1: Prioritize Safety

Safety is paramount after a flood. In Hesperia, you must be cautious about electrical hazards and potential structural damage. If it's safe to do so, turn off your home's power supply and avoid walking through standing water until you're sure it's not electrically charged.

Step 2: Document the Damage

Documenting the extent of the damage is crucial for insurance claims. Take photos and videos of affected areas, including walls, floors, furniture, and personal belongings, to streamline the claims process.

Step 3: Eliminate Standing Water

To mitigate further damage, remove standing water from your Hesperia home. You can use a wet/dry vacuum or hire a professional water extraction service for more extensive flooding. Ensure that waterlogged items like carpets and furniture are moved to a dry area.

Step 4: Prevent Mold Growth

Mold can start to develop within 24-48 hours after water damage. In Hesperia's climate, it's vital to prevent its growth. Increase ventilation by opening windows and doors. Use dehumidifiers and fans to dry the affected areas. Remove any wet materials that cannot be adequately dried, such as drywall or insulation.

Step 5: Sanitize and Disinfect

To ensure a safe living environment, sanitize and disinfect thoroughly after drying. Utilize a mixture of water and bleach or a commercial disinfectant to clean all surfaces, including walls and floors.

Step 6: Assess Structural Damage

Check your Hesperia home for structural damage that may have occurred during the flood, such as cracks in walls, warped floors, or compromised foundations. If you find any issues, consult a structural engineer or contractor for assessment and repairs.

Step 7: Contact Your Insurance Company

Notify your insurance company of the water damage promptly. Provide them with all the documentation you collected in Step 2 and follow their instructions for filing a claim to secure the financial assistance needed for repairs.

When to Call SERVPRO:

While these steps can help address minor water damage, there are situations in Hesperia where professional help from SERVPRO is crucial:

  1. Extensive Flooding: For severe flooding, rely on experts with the equipment and experience needed to handle large-scale disasters.

  2. Hidden Water Damage: SERVPRO professionals can identify and address hidden issues, such as water seepage into walls and floors, preventing mold growth and structural damage.

Toilet Bowl Leak Causes Expensive Water Damage in Victorville Home?

A water leak is shown in a bathroom. We are leaders in emergency water damage restoration services in San Bernardino County.

Hidden water damage can cause significant damage to a structure. That’s why our local Hesperia/Apple Valley and Barstow/Twentynine Palms, Victorville technicians are on call and ready to respond to your water damage emergency 24 hours a day. One common form of hidden water damage is a leaking toilet bowl. If your water bill appears to be higher than usual, the Environmental Protection Agency suggests checking for a hidden water leak by:

  • To check for a toilet bowl leak, place a drop of food coloring in the toilet tank. If the color shows up in the bowl within ten minutes without flushing, you have a leak.
  • Check your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter does not read exactly the same, you probably have a leak.
  • A good method to check for leaks is to examine your winter water use. It’s likely that a family of four has a serious leak problem if its winter water use exceeds 12,000 gallons per month.

Water Leak in Laundry Room Floods Floors in Adelanto Home?

5/30/2023 (Permalink)

Water covers the floor of a laundry room. We are leaders in water damage remediation services in San Bernardino County.

Adelanto needs to know!

Our local Hesperia/Apple Valley and Barstow/Twentynine Palms, Victorville teams aim for five-star reviews from every customer. Here is a recent Google review from one of our customers:

“The SERVPRO team was awesome! We had a leak in the laundry room and SERVPRO came to the rescue. From drying out the damage to restoring everything with no stress on us! The restoration process was explained to us in detail by Kristy and then again by Oscar the project manager. Our main goal was having communication and their entire team kept us informed at every step. Danny, the on-site manager was super attentive to our needs and he takes a lot of pride in his work and wants to make sure the customer is happy every step of the way. He communicated very professionally and made sure we understood what he and his crew were working on. Philip the floor installer was also very personable and attentive to detail when laying the floor. During the entire process, we were never inconvenienced and did not feel stressed (the only stress I had was trying to pick a floor replacement!). Overall SERVPRO checked all the boxes for us in terms of professionals, expertise, communication, stress-free, and overall value. Thank you for making our home look even better than before!” R Michel

Water Hammer Causes Water Damage to Hesperia Home?

5/16/2023 (Permalink)

A pipe is spraying water from a failed pipe fitting. We respond to water damage emergencies 24 hours a day in San Bernardino County.

Water damage can happen at any time and for many reasons. Broken pipes are one of the top causes of water damage in Hesperia. Our teams in Hesperia/Apple Valley and Barstow/Twentynine Palms, Victorville are leaders in water damage restoration services. We have the training, equipment, and experience to restore water damage no matter how extensive the damage is.

One top cause of pipe failure is water hammer. The term water hammer describes the sound pipes make inside the walls when the water is turned off abruptly. Water is pressurized, so when it is turned off abruptly by hand at a faucet, or by an appliance, it sends reverberations, or shock waves, through the pipe. When the pipes vibrate, they make a banging or hammering sound and over time, the pipes will be damaged and can cause flooding. If you notice a banging sound in your pipes, call a plumbing professional right away.

Extremely Happy Water Damage Restoration Customers in Hesperia?

A person is giving a five-star review. We are leaders in water damage and repair services in San Bernardino County.

Our local teams in Hesperia/Apple Valley and Barstow/Twentynine Palms are trusted leaders in water damage restoration. Here is a Google review from a recent water damage customer:

"I was impressed with all aspects of this company. The gals who answered the phone in the office were very professional, friendly, and helpful in getting me to the correct person, etc.
Danny/Foreman was extremely willing to do anything I asked over and above his normal requirements. He ran a tight well-organized ship and kept things moving. He and his crew, David & Steve, worked around some unknown setbacks we encountered in the area we live, which extended the time frame for the project, however; he and his crew were here when expected. He always alerted me when they were coming in so I could have the garage door open for them.
He repeated thru-out the job that he wanted me to advise him of anything that I saw that I didn't like or that I thought should be done differently. My satisfaction was his/their priority.
Steve is a top-notch painter! I love his meticulous way of doing his job.
Kristy was very friendly and customer satisfaction conscious as well. She explained the paperwork clearly and is ready to answer any questions if they came up later." Joyce Van Hulzen

Mold Inspections

5/3/2022 (Permalink)

When operating a commercial building, it’s imperative to designate the role of mold inspection to either a building manager or custodian to ensure that if or when mold arises, it’s remediated as soon as possible.

The regular impact on the environment and age of the building should determine how often a mold inspection takes place. But as a standard practice, you do not need to test for mold unless you can see or smell it.

Should you have a mold outbreak in your commercial building, we recommend a yearly inspection once it is remediated.

It’s essential to stay on top of mold occurrences as more than 50 million people in the U.S. suffer from allergies and are prone to significant illness when introduced to mold.

Remember, the faster mold is identified and remediated, the quicker employees can get back to work to resume the operations of your business.

SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms  is here for all commercial building owners and occupants 24/7 to answer all questions and respond to critical incidents.

How to Mitigate Water Damage

3/28/2022 (Permalink)

Many of us have suffered water damage at some point in our lives or know someone who has. It can be devastating, unexpected, and very problematic.

Water damage is a hazard and happens a lot more often than you might imagine. One of the worst effects of water damage is the growth and spreading of mold and mildew. Water-logged areas can see mold growth after a couple of days.

Some causes of water removal services can be needed in a home or commercial building include

  • Broken or leaking plumbing
  • Clogged toilets
  • Leaking roof
  • Faulty or malfunctioning appliances
  • Issues with HVACs (heating, ventilating and air conditioning units)
  • Natural disasters/weather related

Should any of these scenarios arise SERVPRO will send their trained technicians to complete emergency water restoration services. Water Restoration Steps may include:

  • Inspection and Assessment. SERVPRO of Hesperia Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms performs a thorough damage assessment of the location of the damage
  • Water Removal. The next step in the restoration process is to remove standing water via water extraction
  • Drying and Dehumidifying
  • Cleaning and Sanitizing
  • Complete Restoration

The ultimate goal at SERVPRO is to leave the customers satisfied by the job completed and feeling “Like it never even happened.”

Are your home’s water pipes frozen? Follow these three simple tips.

3/28/2022 (Permalink)

One of the most dreadful experiences of any homeowner is a busted water pipe.

We see many busted pipes during the cold winter months that could have been prevented if cared for proactively and properly.

Here are three recommendations to prevent frozen and busted water pipes in the future.

Running faucets

One of the simplest ways to prevent pipes from busting is to let faucets run on cold days. No, you don’t need to let them run 24/7, but routinely let them run for about 20 minutes a handful of times per day when the weather is below 40 degrees.

Warm your home

Another proactive way to prevent pipes from busting is to keep the colder areas of your home warm. This can be accomplished with space heaters (do not leave them on overnight) to elevate the overall temperature of your home, thus indirectly and slightly elevating the temperature of the water inside the pipes, alleviating the pipes from pressure.

Disconnect water hose

Disconnecting your water hose from the faucet on days where temperatures are under 40 degrees will prevent water from being trapped in the hose and the pipe, which is the most popular cause of busted water pipes in the winter.

Disconnect your water hose on cold days. It’s so simple, and it’ll save you money.

If you do experience a busted pipe causing a water damage in your home or business, call the trained professionals at SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley or SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms.

Prevent Mold

2/8/2022 (Permalink)

Many of us have been there…battling mold in a new house or a home we’ve lived in for many years. It’s awful.

There are some serious dangers that mold inside your home can cause your home and family.

If you’ve already dealt with this issue in the past, now is the time to be proactive and protect your family and yourself from mold with these five simple tips:

  • Open all windows in your house every week
  • Measure the indoor humidity
  • Utilize household exhaust fans, especially in bathrooms
  • Do not ignore wet spills
  • Fix water leaks ASAP

It’s important to note that when a house experiences any type of water damage, mold infestation can arise quickly and spread throughout a home in under 72 hours. Start protecting your home today!

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to give SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms a call at (760) 244-2566.

Preparing for the Storm

2/1/2022 (Permalink)

Many parts of the country have already experienced severe thunderstorms this winter and we've noticed a pattern - many people are not adequately prepared.

People often delay gathering goods to assist them through a thunderstorm, and sometimes it just doesn't seem like a big deal - until you're the one sitting in the dark wishing you would have prepared beforehand.

Our professionals at SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms highly recommend preparing in advance for emergencies, including thunderstorms.

If you have a moment today, grab a small basket and fill it with essential items like:

  • Flashlights
  • Candles
  • Matches
  • Lanterns
  • Portable phone chargers

When you know a thunderstorm is approaching your region, pay attention to your local weather service announcements; they'll keep you in the know about the severity of the storm.

Also, it's imperative to designate a room in your home as a safe space in the event of a thunderstorm. This space should be located away from windows or anything made of glass - should winds be over 40 miles per hour.

Finally, ensure that large trees in your yard or even your neighbor's yard are wind resistant, loose branches are cut, and trees are trimmed; for the safety of your family and home.

Standing in Water?

7/14/2021 (Permalink)

Imagine waking up in the middle of the night to check on your kids and putting your feet on the floor only to find that your feet are in 6 inches of water. Believe or not, this scenario happens more than you think.

How would you handle this?

Who would be your first call?

How many towels would you have available to sop of the water?

Where did it come from?

What am I going to do now?

These are some of the first things that would likely run through your mind. While trying to remain calm, he first thing you want to do of course, is check on your family. Once you know everyone is safe, try to locate the source of the water and get it stopped. It could be a toilet supply line, shut it off immediately. It could be a busted pipe under your sink, shut the water off immediately. Maybe you have no idea where it is coming from – call SERVPRO!

With over 50 years of experience in the fire and water damage restoration industry and over 1,400 franchises across North America, SERVPRO is amongst the premier companies in our respective fields. If you experience a loss like the one described above, call SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley or SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms at 760-244-2566 and we will work with you to help make it “Like it never even happened.”

Here comes the rain again (maybe).

4/27/2021 (Permalink)

It appears as though spring has finally sprung. With that being said, it also appears winter isn’t quite ready to leave just yet. April of 2021 has been an interesting month for weather. The beginning of the month was mild, then hot, then mild again, now firmly in the 60’s most of the day. They say “April showers bring May flowers”, but nobody said anything about needing a jacket halfway into spring.

SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms has seen our share of random bouts of weather having negative consequences for the residents of the Victor Valley be it flash flooding, wind damage, or other effects of wild weather. While we haven’t experienced much in the way of rain this month, it’s never a bad idea to know who to call in the event of a water loss.

If the weather decides to change up its tune and the rain kicks back up (a la March 2021), flash flooding is nearly inevitable. As heavy grey clouds linger in the sky with only intermittent patches of sunlight, just remember this: SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms are here to help in the event of a water loss event. With over 50 years in the water mitigation industry, we can help restore your home or business to preloss conditions and make it “Like it never even happened.”

There’s no such thing as “too prepared”.

4/22/2021 (Permalink)

“Rain, rain, go away / come again another day.”

Everyone who’s reading this article has undoubtedly heard or recited this poem at least once in their life. While reciting simple lyrics like this is something we all do, has it ever worked for you? Me neither!

Southern California deals with odd bouts of occasional rain. Sometimes, months will go by with seemingly not a cloud in the sky. Other times, it seems as though the sky itself is falling (see: March 2021). While our calendar year is divided into seasons, California seems to kind of just do whatever it wants in regards to weather.

Every once in a while, though, it really comes down. Torrential downpours are rare but far from impossible in the Victor Valley. The desert floor makes for fairly ideal flooding conditions and, unfortunately, many of our homes and businesses are built on the desert floor. Sure, we have foundations and slabs but if the water wants to make its way into your property, no amount of singing will deter it.

Enter: SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms. We are all too aware of how easily houses and businesses flood, leaving quite an expensive mess as a result. Luckily, we have been dealing with water losses for over fifty years and have established ourselves as a premiere service provider in the mitigation industry. We can help you get your home or business back to preloss conditions and make it “Like it never even happened.”

A surefire way to feel “washed up”

4/21/2021 (Permalink)

Sometimes, multitasking is a necessity.

Every parent is aware of this fact. Get the kids up for school, get them dressed, make sure they brush their teeth, make sure they eat breakfast, make sure everyone has their school supplies… Is that everything? Oh, right. You forgot to eat, brush your teeth, and now you’re going to be late to work if you decide to handle those particular things now.

Instead, mornings are a mad mambo of organized chaos. Bagel in one hand, phone in the other, family dog running between your legs, kids yelling… It’s a wonder anything gets done.

Now imagine this: you wake up to a sink full of dishes. The kids are still asleep, and maybe there’s time to load the sink up and get them done before they wake up. You plug the drain, add dish soap to the basin, and turn on the water. While it’s filling up, you think to yourself “maybe there’s time to feed the dog, too”. Patting yourself on the back, you grab the dogfood bag and go to fill Spot’s bowl.

“MOMMMM!!”

You’ve been found out. Billy is awake and suddenly the morning light seems much too bright, much too harsh.

You throw the dog food back into place and rush upstairs in time to intervene in a fight between the kids. With a temporary armistice agreed upon, you go about your morning routine. Bagel in hand, phone in the other, rush downstairs and…

There’s two inches of water covering the kitchen and dining room floors, respectively. The kitchen sink has flooded, a soapy mess erupting out of the basin.

Well, so much for “organized chaos”.

Luckily, SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms have experience in this exact scenario. Give us a call today and let us make it “Like it never even happened.”

Water - It's Everywhere

3/2/2021 (Permalink)

The majority of planet Earth is covered in water. Upwards of 78%. We know more about space than we do about our own oceans due to the technical limitations regarding pressure and supporting life in an oxygen-free environment. The human body is also mostly water. If you don’t drink water for three days, it’s lights out. Why am I bringing up these moderately interesting but well-known facts? Simple.

Water is necessary for life on earth, but it also causes some serious issues.

As I said, we are mostly made of water. Our homes, however, do not share this biology. If your house suddenly becomes 80% water, we will be expecting your call because that means your home is at least a couple of feet underwater. That is not what one would consider a “healthy balance”.

Floods in California aren’t common. Traditional floods, anyway. Flash floods, however, are very common and cause a lot of headaches. Even with adequate time to prepare, be it with sandbags or temporary trenches meant to defer floodwater away from your home, water seems to find a way into people’s homes.

Aside from the obvious damage caused by water, there are two other factors that need to be considered that make floods even more of a pain.

  • Insulation: If insulation gets wet, it loses all effectiveness and is rendered virtually useless. Walls will need to be cut and batts will need to be removed and replaced.
  • Mold: Mold can begin to form in as little as 48 hours given the proper conditions. Trust me: this is an experience you want to avoid.

So what did we learn today? Water is in everything, you don’t want water in your house, and the SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms blogs can be sort of peculiar at times. These are all facts.

If you experience a water intrusion at your home or business, give us a call. We can help make it “Like it never even happened.”

When Toilets Attack

2/17/2021 (Permalink)

If you’ve ever woken up at 3 AM to an urgent need to use the restroom, you have probably experienced what I like to call “sleep delirium”. You jump, roll, or fall out of bed, attempt to steady yourself by leaning on the nearest tall and heavy object, struggle to open your eyes fully in the darkness and then flick on a light, only to feel as though you’ve temporarily blinded yourself, and make a mad dash to the nearest restroom. You make it in time, handle your business, and then zombie-shuffle back to bed. Your feet are a little cold from whatever moisture you stepped in on the way back, but you made it. You sleep through the rest of the night successfully. All is right in the world.

The first thought you have upon waking is,

“Why are my feet wet?”

You replay the early morning’s events in your mind. Got up in a panic, used restroom, went back to bed. Where was this mystery water?

Oh. Oh no.

You jump out of bed for the second time today and dash for the bathroom. Your worst fears are confirmed as soon as you throw open the door; the entire room (and the immediate area around it) is under two inches of water. To add insult to injury, it appears to be what is referred to as “black water”.

“Good morning to me.”

This hypothetical situation has occurred to many people. If it occurs to you, don’t hesitate to call SERVPRO of SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms. We can restore peace and order to your home or business.

Water Damage Doesn’t Take Time Off

7/30/2020 (Permalink)

It's summertime in southern California which typically means, swimming pools, barbecuing, beach trips, vacations, and evenings spent next to a camp fire. These activities may be a welcome and much needed step away from the daily grind, but just because you are taking a little time off doesn’t mean potential leaks or floods are.

One of the most common types of floods we at SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms are dispatched to is kitchen floods. Picture this: the family is in the backyard, barbecuing and swimming in the pool. You are in the kitchen preparing more food for the barbecue and cleaning the prep dishes. One of the kids decides they absolutely, positively need your attention this very instant to show you how big of a splash they can make while belly-flopping into the pool and subsequently drenching your lawn furniture with water, thus causing the metal frames underneath to get wet, which might lead to rust, and nobody wants rust. You get a towel to go dry off the frames and -

The sink is still running. It has been for nearly half an hour.

You come back inside to an inch of water flooding your kitchen and dining room, completely soaking your hardwood floors. What do you do now? Call SERVPRO of course.

Have that fun in the sun but when flood water rains on your parade, give SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley or SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms a call at (760)244-2566. We can restore your home to pre-belly flop conditions and make it “Like it never even happened.”

Supply Lines

4/13/2020 (Permalink)

If you need a water pipe repair at your Victor Valley business, then you might be wondering what to do, and what you need to know beforehand. One of the first things to understand is that flooding is categorized by the amount of contaminants in the water.

What the Water Categories Mean

Water is broken into three categories to help professionals know what type of restoration efforts are necessary after water damage has occurred.

Category one is clean water, meaning water straight from a pipe. This water is also typically safe to consume. Category two water contains minor contaminants such as soap, cleaners, food particles, or other non-toxic substances. Category three is any water that may have come into contact with sewage or another potentially toxic substance.

What Category 2 Water Might Look Like for a Business

If you have a category two water leak, you might be curious as to where it came from. It’s most common to see this type of water in a flooded space in areas such as break rooms where there may be a sink or washer of some kind. It may also occur in manufacturing facilities where products need to be washed, or in restaurants around the utility or food preparation areas.

Bathroom Supply Lines

4/2/2020 (Permalink)

Bathroom supply lines are made of both solid and flexible materials. The lifespan of a supply line depends on the material and whether or not it was properly installed.

The material and texture of a supply line will affect how long it will last. Solid supply lines can last for decades, whereas flexible lines are less durable and a bit more cost-effective to replace. Choose from the following materials:

Braided stainless steel

Chromed copper

Copper

CPVC

Flexible Copper

PEX

Solid copper lines are much more expensive than solid CPVC lines or flexible materials. In general, solid lines are used for long runs, and flexible lines are better suited for short distances.

Supply lines may succumb to a particular type of damage due to the line material. More common types of damage involving lines and fittings include:

Corroded braided metal hoses

Separated brass barbed fittings due to stress corrosion

Broken plastic coupling nuts

Burst supply lines

All of these types of damage can cause a bathroom leak and Category One (clean water) damage.

Replace lines if you experience a pipe burst or other supply line damage. Depending on the material, Victor Valley homeowners should consider calling SERVPRO of Hesperia / Apple Valley / Barstow / Twentynine Palms. Our expert technicians have the knowledge and tools to quickly and efficiently dry-out and repair a bathroom due to a ruptured supply line.

The Effects of a Water Damage

2/20/2020 (Permalink)

Water is a lot of things.

It is essential to life on earth. The human body is mostly made up of water. If you go without water for an extended period of time, you will die. On the other hand, water is one of the most destructive substances on earth. Massive tsunamis and thunderstorms can cause destructive floods, destroying anything in their path.

Water is also a universal solvent. This means water can dissolve nearly anything, given enough time. Think of the Grand Canyon. Massive amounts of stone carved into a canyon over the course of millions of years. Imagine comparing that to a flood in your home or business. Water damage in properties nearly never occurs for long enough to erode things like stone, but it can easily erode and dissolve things such as drywall, plaster, wood, and any paint or varnish that may be covering it. This process happens when materials are exposed to certain amounts of water for a long period of time and the molecular bonds of the material begin to weaken and deteriorate, and in some materials cases completely dissipating and becoming a mushy substance.

Water is pretty incredible, but so are the floors and walls of your home or business. If a flood or major leak is threatening to turn your home to mush, give SERVPRO of Hesperia / Apple Valley /Barstow / Twentynine Palms a call. We are here to help 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

When a Flood Happens

2/18/2020 (Permalink)

When a flood affects your Hesperia / Apple Valley property, the restoration process should begin almost immediately, though various issues can cause problems. Technician safety is a common example of this. The best way to avoid this hang-up is thorough training of all personnel involved in the process. That way, technicians can identify and neutralize safety issues allowing work to proceed smoothly.

Water intrusion is likely to cause electrical hazards. Rising water can reach electrical outlets, causing short circuits and increasing the risk of electrocution for anyone who is in proximity of the loss. Our SERVPRO technicians use their training to respond to such hazards in different ways, including the use of correct circuit testers. We use testers that check whether a circuit is both grounded and protected by a GFCI, or Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter.

When flood water collects on the floors, various airborne hazards can develop. With proper training, restoration crews can eliminate or minimize such risks. Using air movers to increase airflow expedites the drying process and helps control the excess moisture introduced into the structure by the flooding. However, it can also create other problems such as aerosolizing contaminants. Inhalation of such contaminants can cause health issues. We train our SERVPRO technicians to set up Air Filtration Devices to remove contaminants from the air during the restoration process. We use devices with advanced features such as HEPA filters and activated carbon, which removes 99.97% of particulate matter in the air.

Sometimes safety issues develop due to poor management of the affected area. Moisture makes most surfaces slick, increasing the risk of slip and fall accidents. Cables and hoses that supply the restoration equipment can also trip people. Our SERVPRO technicians use their skills to plan the loss site, minimizing such risks. We set up a staging area for the equipment used in the restoration, reducing movements to and from the loss site. We also secure cables and hoses to avoid trip hazards.

Flood water can cause a lot of problems. SERVPRO of Hesperia / Apple Valley is ready to help return your property to preloss conditions. We are here to help 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
