Our local Hesperia/Apple Valley and Barstow/Twentynine Palms, Victorville teams are leaders in fire damage restoration services in Wrightwood. Our technicians are trained and certified to clean and restore fire damage in homes and commercial properties. • Always stay in the kitchen when frying on the stovetop.
  • Keep an eye on what you fry. If you see wisps of smoke or the oil smells, immediately turn off the burner and/or carefully remove the pan from the burner. Smoke is a danger sign that the oil is too hot.
  • Heat the oil slowly to the temperature you need for frying or sautéing.
  • Add food gently to the pot or pan so the oil does not splatter.
  • Always cook with a lid beside your pan. If you have a fire, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner. Do not remove the cover because the fire could start again. Let the pan cool for a long time. Never throw water on the fire.

10/10/2023 (Permalink)

At SERVPRO Team Brogdon, we believe that being prepared and informed is the key to protecting your home or business. In this blog post, we'll explore some crucial tips for safeguarding your property during National Fire Prevention Week.

The Significance of National Fire Prevention Week

National Fire Prevention Week is observed during the week of October 9th in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. This devastating fire claimed lives and left countless people homeless. The goal of this week is to raise awareness about fire safety and prevention to prevent such tragedies from happening again.

Essential Fire Prevention Tips

  1. Install Smoke Alarms: Make sure your property has working smoke alarms on every level and inside and outside sleeping areas. Test them monthly and replace batteries as needed.

  2. Create a Fire Escape Plan: Develop a clear and practiced fire escape plan for your family or employees. Designate meeting points outside and ensure everyone knows the quickest exits.

  3. Check Electrical Systems: Regularly inspect your property's electrical systems. Replace or repair damaged wiring and outlets promptly. Avoid overloading circuits.

  4. Store Flammable Materials Safely: Keep flammable materials like gasoline, propane, and cleaning products in well-ventilated areas, away from heat sources, and in approved containers.

  5. Maintain Heating Equipment: Schedule professional inspections and maintenance for heating systems, including furnaces and chimneys, before the cold weather sets in.

  6. Kitchen Safety: Never leave cooking unattended, and keep flammable items away from the stove. Make sure you have a working fire extinguisher in your kitchen and know how to use it.

Microwave Causes Kitchen Fire in Barstow Home?

A microwave is shown on fire. We respond to fire damage emergencies 24 hours a day in San Bernardino County.

Our technicians have the training, equipment, and experience to restore fire, smoke, and soot damage quickly and efficiently. Microwaves simplify our lives and make reheating and defrosting food easy. Here are some tips for operating a microwave safely from the National Fire Protection Association:

  • PURCHASE a microwave oven that is listed by a qualified testing laboratory. Make sure to complete and return the product registration card. This way, the manufacturer can reach you if there is a recall of the product.
  • PLUG the microwave oven directly into the wall outlet and never use an extension cord.
  • MAKE sure the microwave oven is at a safe height, within easy reach of all users.
  • OPEN food slowly, away from the face. Hot steam or the food itself can cause burns.
  • FOOD heats unevenly in microwave ovens. Stir and test before eating or giving to children.
  • NEVER heat a baby bottle in the microwave. Since a microwave oven heats unevenly, it can create hot pockets, leading to burns. Warm a bottle in a bowl of warm, not hot or boiling, water, or by running it under the tap.

Their labor staff and admin staff are both professional, responsive and go above and beyond to provide good quality work and customer satisfaction. The mold remediation was self-pay and they didn’t try to swindle my family. SERVPRO in Hesperia/AV even took the more cost-efficient route for our budget without compromising the integrity and quality of the reconstruction. Apple Valley Residents Prepare for Wildfire Season?

8/7/2023 (Permalink)

A firefighter is putting out a small wildfire. We restore fire damage 24 hours a day in San Bernardino County.

When you need fire damage restoration services, our local Hesperia/Apple Valley and Barstow/Twentynine Palms, Victorville teams are ready to respond 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Here are some tips for creating defensible space from the San Bernardino County website:

Prevention

  • Use rock, mulch, flower beds, or gardens as ground cover for bare spaces and as effective firebreaks
  • Roofs and exteriors of structures should be constructed of non-combustible or fire-resistant materials such as fire resistant roofing materials: tile, slate, sheet iron, aluminum, brick, or stone
  • Clean roof surfaces, gutters, and property of pine needles, leaves, branches, etc., monthly to avoid an accumulation of flammable materials, especially important during fire season
  • Wood siding, exterior wood paneling, and other highly combustible materials should be treated with fire-retardant chemicals
  • Create fire-safe zones with stone walls, patios, swimming pools, decks, and roadways
  • Remove branches and limbs within 10 feet of the flue opening of any stove or chimney
  • Check your local nursery or county extension service for advice on fire-resistant plans that are suited for your environment
  • There are no “fire-proof” plants. Select high-moisture plants that grow close to the ground and have a low sap or resin content, such as rockrose, ice plant, and aloe
  • Fire-resistant shrubs include hedging roses, bush honeysuckles, currant, cotoneaster, sumac, and shrub apples
  • Use hardwood plants such as maple, poplar, and cherry trees. They are less flammable than pine, firs, and other conifers.

How Can I Prepare My Home in Victorville for Wildfire Season?

7/5/2023 (Permalink)

A wildfire is burning. We are leaders in fire damage restoration services in San Bernardino County.

Last year, the Heritage fire burned 500 acres near and in the city limits of Victorville, causing property damage and downed powerlines that left many people without power. Wildfire season is coming and now is a good time to prepare homes and businesses by removing vegetation around properties to create a defensible space.

Our local Hesperia/Apple Valley and Barstow/Twentynine Palms, Victorville teams offer this helpful information from Cal Fire for preparing your home for wildfire.

What to do:

The first five feet from your home is the most important because flying embers can travel miles ahead of the active front of wildfires that can ignite and spread the fire to your home.

  1. Use hardscapes like gravel, pavers, or concrete. No combustible bark or mulch.
  2. Remove all dead and dying plants, weeds, and debris (leaves, needles, etc.) from your roof, gutter, deck, porch, stairways, and under any areas of your home
  3. Remove all branches within 10 feet of any chimney or stovepipe outlet
  4. Limit combustible items (like outdoor furniture and planters) on top of decks
  5. Relocate firewood and lumber to Zone 2
  6. Replace combustible fencing, gates, and arbors attached to the home with noncombustible alternatives
  7. Consider relocating garbage and recycling containers outside this zone

Consider relocating boats, RVs, vehicles, and other combustible items outside this zone.

A row of fire extinguishers is shown. We restore fire damage 24-hours a day in San Bernardino County.

Our local teams in Hesperia/Apple Valley and Barstow/Twentynine Palms want everyone in Barstow to be prepared in case of a home fire emergency. Portable fire extinguishers are great for containing small fires once everyone is evacuated from the area. Here are some tips from the National Fire Protection Association for selecting and using a home fire extinguisher:

  • For the home, select a multi-purpose extinguisher (can be used on all types of home fires) that is large enough to put out a small fire but not so heavy as to be difficult to handle
  • Choose a fire extinguisher that carries the label of an independent testing laboratory
  • Read the instructions that come with the fire extinguisher and become familiar with its parts and operation before a fire breaks out. Local fire departments or fire equipment distributors often offer hands-on fire extinguisher trainings.
  • Install fire extinguishers close to an exit and keep your back to a clear exit when you use the device so you can make an easy escape if the fire cannot be controlled. If the room fills with smoke, please leave immediately.

Drought equals High Fire Season in California

6/5/2022 (Permalink)

We have all been hearing about how deep into the drought we have fallen in California over the past couple of years due to low precipitation during our winter months. As we are all aware, no moisture means high alert for wildfires.

One of the things you can do as a business or homeowner is to make sure that overgrowth of vegetation is cut back or down and cleared for several yards from any structures. Any dry vegetation can easily be sparked to start a fire that can get out of control quickly and cause risk to your structure.

SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms are here to help. If you have questions about what you can do to minimize your risk or need assistance preparing your home for fire season, give us a call. We will do what we can to help protect your assets.

Smoke Damage

1/4/2022 (Permalink)

When we think of fire damage, our minds typically go towards a scenario where a home or structure is destroyed by flames, but did you know smoke can be damaging as well?

Smoke can ruin many items in a structure as it can cover your possessions in soot and leave a strong odor behind, which is dangerous to breathe in.

It’s important for you to know this, the longer one waits to begin the restoration process after smoke damage, it’s far more difficult to repair and may take even longer.

Some of the signs of smoke damage include:

  • Yellowing paint and/or countertops
  • A smokey smell on furniture and clothing days after the fire has been put out
  • Soot on walls and surfaces
  • Discoloring of surfaces, including countertops

If your property has endured a fire, it’s very likely that it has also endured some type of smoke damage.

Fire Extinguisher Check

10/4/2021 (Permalink)

Given the number of Wildfires that have occurred across the Western United States in the past few years, homeowner that live near areas of heavy brush and forestry have a strong fear of the “if and when”. One thing we can do to help protect our families, homes and businesses is to have equipment and training that may be useful to stop a fire or at the very least buy some time to escape a fire.

One such tool we are all aware of is the fire extinguisher. Many of us have them in our home, business or automobile however how many of us actually know how to use one? Better yet, when was the last time we checked it to see if it was still active?

Property Manager Fire Safety Tips

9/1/2021 (Permalink)

Fire at a Work Site Heavy Equipment Ignites Flames

We talk a lot on here about tips for homeowners and business owners, but what about those that manage multi-unit dwellings. According to the Rental Housing Journal, the top 5 tips property managers need for fire safety for the units they manage are:

  1. Perform a Fire Risk Assessment of the entire property. This assessment will help you, the property manager, identify potential risks for fires.
  2. Install smoke detectors and smoke alarms. Early detection can save lives in the event of a fire. However, installing is not the end of this – you must also test them twice a year to make sure they are in good working condition.
  3. Initiate a “no smoking” policy. You can impose policies that prevent tenants or guests from smoking in the units, hallways, common areas or enclosed spaces. This is the #1 cause of civilian home fire deaths.
  4. Create an evacuation plan and make sure your tenants are educated with regard to the plan.
  5. Engage in regular preventative maintenance. Be sure to check electrical systems, HVAC systems and make sure weed abatement is conducted routinely.

SERVPRO can help with assessing your fire risk assessment as well as with any clean-up that may be required in the event of a fire.

Give us a call today at 760-244-2566 if you need assistance getting this important safety plan in place, we are here to help!

It's Coming

5/4/2021 (Permalink)

Wind and heat only equates to one thing for the residents of the Victor Valley: wildfire season is upon us and ready to get to work early this year. SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms know a thing or two about wildfire season, which is exactly why we want to share some hot tips (the pun was too easy to pass on) with our readers to make sure that even with fire season in full swing, you’ll stay cool as a cucumber.

To clarify for those who may not be familiar with our services, SERVPRO is an international fire and water restoration service provider. We handle things like flood and house fire damage for insurance companies and individuals alike. We have been in business for over 50 years and in that time, we have seen just about everything you can imagine. California’s weather seems to creep in earlier and earlier every year, but the steps we recommend haven’t changed.

  1. Keep your rain gutters and yard free of combustible debris: Yes, that includes dead leaves. This debris works as an excellent fuel for fire. Time to have little Billy earn that allowance he keeps hounding you for!
  2. Keep fire extinguishers nearby high-risk areas: This includes kitchens, grills, fireplaces, and any other place where an open flame can quickly spread.
  3. If all else fails, call SERVPRO: Fires are awful but they certainly happen. In the event of a fire, give SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley or SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms a call. We have the knowledge and experience to restore your home or business to preloss conditions and make it “Like it never even happened.”

Hey man, fireworks are fireworks

4/21/2021 (Permalink)

Cinco De Mayo, 4th of July, Memorial Day… yes, summer is coming and it's coming fast. What does that mean for the residents of the Victor Valley and high desert communities? It means barbecues, long nights by a bonfire, camping, and fireworks (of the legal variety, of course). What do all these things have in common besides being summer activities? They all involve fire.

SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms seems to get more house and commercial fire jobs than anything else. A lot of my time spent in the field is documenting footage and photographs of electrical issues, accidents with cigarettes, kitchen fires, as well as a long list of other causes. While this may or may not be the case, it is true that structure fires are very prevalent in the desert communities.

If someone were to ask you if you had a fire extinguisher in your home, what would you say? What if that same person asked you the last time you inspected this theoretical extinguisher? Do you know what type of extinguisher it is? Were you aware that there are multiple types of fire extinguishers? These are all uncommon questions that need a bit more emphasis. These devices can not only stop small fires from growing large, they can save lives.

So, Reader, do you have a fire extinguisher specifically made for grease fires in your kitchen? Do you have any type? There are a lot of fun activities coming up and it would be awful if such a minute detail was overlooked.

If a fire breaks out in your home or business, once everyone is accounted for make SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley or SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms your very first call. We can help restore your property to preloss conditions and make it “Like it never even happened.”

The Hills Are Burning

2/17/2021 (Permalink)

While it’s uncommon, sometimes lightning does strike twice.

Southern California is known for a temperate climate, beachfront views, beautiful sunsets, and exorbitant costs of living. What it’s not known for is heat storms. Nonetheless, they happen fairly frequently in the summer months. Everyone knows that storms can be dangerous but when you couple that with California’s annual wildfire season, they take on a whole new life.

Lightning is obviously very dangerous. Everyone has heard the story of Ben Franklin’s kite and key combo acting as a lightning rod. While the validity of this story seems incredulous, the very believable aspect of it is lightning’s attraction to metal.  It is a fantastic conductor, especially when it is elevated by a rod, pole, or other high structure. This are known as “lightning rods” and while metal is a good conductor, any high structure can be dangerous in a lightning storm.

California is full of wilderness. State parks dot the landscape from the Redwood Forests up north to San Bernardino National Forest near the Riverside county / Orange county line. These forests are full of high structures commonly referred to as “trees”. These trees are typically very dry come summer time and, when struck by lightning, go up like a match. These types of fires grow very quickly, often threatening homes once they reach more populated areas. Houses affected by wildfires are oftentimes completely destroyed due to the overwhelming size and heat of these fires.

If your house is affected by a wildfire (caused by lightning or any other source), please give SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms a call. With over 50 years in the fire restoration business, SERVPRO is your best bet for getting your home back to preloss condition.

Fire Plan

1/14/2021 (Permalink)

I don’t know about you, but I look back fondly on the 90 degree Christmas days of years gone by. Waking up to glaring sunlight, drinking iced tea, listening to Christmas songs refer to something known as “snow”…

If text didn’t portray my sarcasm properly, the above was meant in jest. Southern California didn’t seem to get the memo that winter is the cold part of the year. While Texas is busy getting record snowfall and preparing for flash flooding, I am sitting in an air conditioned office writing a blog about fires. Yes, that’s what this is: a wildfire blog written in the middle of January. Odd, isn’t it?

Every resident of the state knows the dangers of wildfire, but what would you do if a wildfire put your home at risk? The thought is a terrifying one, but it is a very real possibility.

The most important thing to take into account is not your home, your belongings, or the tangible items you may lose in a fire; it is your and your family’s lives. That is why SERVPRO of Hesperia / Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow / Twentynine Palms wants to remind you of this simple fact: you need a plan.

Whether that is a place to meet up, a place to go if the worst case scenario becomes a reality, or a list of numbers to call, it is crucial to know what steps to take after a disaster has occurred. We suggest creating this plan, relaying it to your family, and practicing it at least once a month. Not only will this give you and your family peace of mind, it might just save your life.

If this nightmare becomes a reality, call SERVPRO first. With over 50 years of experience in fire and water damage restoration, we are a premiere service provider and will help to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Christmas Tree Fires

12/4/2020 (Permalink)

Christmas lights and Mariah Carey jingles can only mean one thing: Christmas is right around the corner! In contrast to the rest of 2020, southern Californians are going above and beyond this year to show their holiday spirit. Christmas trees are flying off the lots (and all the Clark Griswolds of the world are out in the hills, pipe saw in hand and station wagon at the ready), online retailers are offering amazing deals, and people as a whole are ready to be happy and experience a bit of joy in what has been a mostly joyless year.

Whether you are going to fly solo or have family over this holiday season, it is always important to remember a few things about staying safe during your celebrations.

  • Christmas trees are beautiful decorations, but they are also a fire hazard. If you are using a real tree, remember to keep it well hydrated and to keep any open flame at least 3 feet away from it.
  • Christmas lights and decorations are awesome, but they can be a real drain on your homes breaker box. Older homes are especially prone to popping circuits or experiencing electrical issues. Be sure not to overwhelm your circuit while going crazy with the lights.
  • If you do experience an electrical or tree fire over the holidays, be sure to call SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms. With over 50 years of experience, we are the go-to resource for all of your restoration and reconstruction needs.

From all of us at SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms, we wish you and your family happy holidays and a prosperous new year!

Halloween Fire Tips

10/7/2020 (Permalink)

Halloween is a lot of people’s favorite time of the year (including all of us here at SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley) and regardless of what your stance on it is, most kids can agree that free candy is never a bad thing.

One of the best parts of Halloween is carving jack-o-lanterns. It is not only a great way to make fun art out of a squash; it’s also an excuse to get messy. People like to showcase their art by illuminating these carved out gourds with candles, making them visible to the kids making their rounds and fueling their quest for sugar.

Halloween is a great time of year, but there are inherent risks present anytime fire is involved. Here are a couple of tips from https://www.nfpa.org/Public-Education/Fire-causes-and-risks/Seasonal-fire-causes/Halloween to make sure your Halloween is not only fun, but safe:

  • Use a battery-operated candle or glow stick in jack-o-lanterns.
  • When choosing costumes, stay away from long trailing fabric.
  • Teach children to stay away from open flames, including jack-o-lanterns with candles in them.
  • Dried flowers, cornstalks, and crepe paper catch fire easily. Keep all decorations away from open flames and other heat sources like light bulbs and heaters.
  • Provide children with flashlights to carry for lighting or glow sticks as part of their costume.
  • Remember to keep exits clear of decorations so nothing blocks escape routes. Make sure all smoke alarms are working.

If something does happen to go wrong, make SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley one of your first phone calls. We have over fifty years of experience helping home and business owners just like you when their property is affected by fire damage.

Be Prepared For Fires

9/8/2020 (Permalink)

As summer begins to wind down in the high desert communities of Victor Valley, southern Californians breathe a collective sigh of relief. The summer of 2020 has been a lot of things, and hot is definitely ranked high on the list.

With that being said, California likes to throw its inhabitants atmospheric curve balls almost constantly. We are one of the only areas with 30 degree temperature swings occurring between morning and night. As of this blog posts penning, we are smack-dab in the middle of a heat wave that is besting temperatures of 110 degrees. In spite of the scorching heat, many people are spending time at the beach and outside trying to squeeze in that one last BBQ or pool party.

With all of the heat and dry brush so prevalent in California, wildfires and brush fires are a near inevitability. The Cherry Fire that occurred near Yucaipa and plumed the sky with ash and smoke acted as a humbling reminder of nature’s propensity to spontaneously… well, combust. Wildfires often times quickly grow out of control and put homes in danger. Unfortunately, these fires quickly rip through neighborhoods and leave disaster in their wake.

If your home or business is damaged by a wildfire, take solace in knowing that SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms is ready to help. Not only can we repair the damage fires cause; we can deodorize the area, as well as salvage belongings that have not been destroyed by the fire.

No matter what time of year, SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms can make it “Like it never even happened.”

Common Causes of Fire

7/30/2020 (Permalink)

Did you know the number one cause of house fires in the world is cooking? That’s right, cooking food. According to www.firstalert.com, the top three reasons house fires occur are:

  1. Cooking

More specifically, oil and grease fires. Many of these fires are avoidable but due to the fact that people attempt to put them out using water as opposed to the correct type of fire extinguisher (Class B or K, or an all-purpose Class A, B, C type) they can accelerate. Make sure that you have one of the above-mentioned types of fire extinguishers handy somewhere in your kitchen.

  1. Heating

In the colder parts of the year, southern Californians are known to crank their heaters and use fireplaces or space heaters. Be sure to properly maintain and clean these sources of heat. Creosote (the dark brown or black substance that forms as a byproduct of burning organic matter in an enclosed area) is extremely flammable and very hazardous. Take proper steps to ensure the area is creosote-free.

  1. Smoking in bed

Everyone knows smoking is bad for your health, but it may be very bad for your home as well. An average of 18,100 (www.nfpa.org) house fires begin due to people falling asleep while smoking.

If a house fire occurs for these or any other reason, SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms is here to help make it “Like it never even happened.” With over 50 years in the industry, you can trust us to make it right, day or night. Restoration After a House Fire

7/30/2020 (Permalink)

It was a cold and rainy day when I met Kathleen. I arrived at her home in Apple Valley, CA just after 9 AM to take photos of the damage caused by a very destructive fire that had left most of the back half of her home a charred husk. The first thing I noticed when I got there was the smell of smoke and ash emanating from nearly everywhere on the property. The wooden beams in her backyard were blackened and cracked, many of the windows in the back of the home were blown out from the excessive heat, and entire walls had been burned to the point where they had to be demolished to prevent possible structural integrity issues.

The place had an almost other-worldly and surreal quality about it, feeling more like a post-apocalyptic landscape than a person’s home. Kathleen had cordoned herself off into two small areas on the outer perimeter of the home, staying in high spirits while simultaneously living with the reality of suffering a major house fire.

On subsequent visits, I saw the once desolate shell start to more and more closely resemble a house. Walls were torn down and new ones were built up. Damaged sections of the roof were torn off, replaced by more modern and durable materials. The smell of smoke slowly dissipated. Everything began to come together, and Kathleen grew happier and happier with every day that passed.

Finally the day came wherein personal belongings would be moved back in to the home. When I pulled up in front of the home (it looked like an actual home again), I was blown away. Everything was in its right place. The fireplace looked gorgeous. The new windows gave the kitchen and dining room an elegant, modern flair. It truly looked “Like it never even happened.”

This experience was unique to me, but not to SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms. Work and professionalism of this quality is a daily occurrence to the professional technicians that work here.

Experiencing a house fire is always devastating, but it is not the situation that dictates the outcome; it is how you react to the situation. Take it from my firsthand experience: SERVPRO of Hesperia/Apple Valley and SERVPRO of Barstow/Twentynine Palms is the right company to repair your home.

Smoke and Soot Damage

2/20/2020 (Permalink)

House fires are usually fairly easy to get under control and contain, assuming firefighters are able to begin work soon after they begin. SERVPRO franchises are typically contacted to tackle the significant amount of soot and soiling that results from a fire. Soot and smoke residues can be especially damaging to porous fabrics in the home. While fire and smoke damage may seem like the end of these materials, SERVPRO of Hesperia / Apple Valley/Barstow/Twentynine Palms specializes in restoring rather than replacing.

Our team of fire damage technicians specializes in the restoration of carpets, rugs, and upholstery. As a homeowner, you can trust us to have the expertise, equipment, and experience to salvage contents with smoke or soot soiling.

While the most significant areas of smoke damage usually manifest on the ceilings or upper walls, you may find that soot falls onto the carpets below. The damage this process causes can be exacerbated by water from firefighters dousing the flames, which can act as a setting agent. SERVPRO technicians can remove your carpets and haul them from the property. We can apply a variety of carpet conditioners to the affected carpet to remove any residual damage. Our technicians can then re-install the renovated carpet to your home.

Regardless of the size or severity of the fire, SERVPRO will always put priority on restoring affected materials over replacing them. We are here to help 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Soot

2/20/2020 (Permalink)

Soot damage is a common side effect of a house fire. Soot can be a flakey, powdery, or oily substance which forms from incomplete combustion. Fine carbonized compounds cling to surfaces in your home like ceilings and walls, not to mention personal property. Soot can be tough to remove, and sometimes it is not possible to restore the surface to its pre-fire condition.

There are two types of sediment you can find after soot damage to your home – oily and dry. Running your finger over the surface is a quick way to figure out what type you have. Oily residue smears, whereas dry residue acts more like a powder. Both are difficult to clean, which is where SERVPRO comes in. The longer you leave the smoky substance sitting in your home, the more damage it does.

Heat from the fire pushes soot and can cover everything in its path. Smoke looks for a kind of equilibrium and travels until its energy is used before making its way to cooler areas. Soot is acidic, and acidic materials are destructive to a majority of elements found in nature. Over time, they continue to oxidize materials, which leads to discoloration, etching, corrosion or pitting. Stains over metals can yellow and soften. These reactions are ongoing from soot residues until they are removed.

SERVPRO of Hesperia / Apple Valley / Barstow / Twentynine Palms specializes in fire damage remediation. We use an array of special proprietary chemicals designed to clean and deodorize fire damage. We are here to help 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Fire Tips

2/18/2020 (Permalink)

Contemplating fire damage to your home in Hesperia / Apple Valley can be anxiety-inducing, especially if you are unprepared. For this reason, it is crucial to have a fire preparedness plan in place. SERVPRO of Hesperia / Apple Valley wants to share these hot tips for when things heat up.

  1. Install Smoke Detectors

Once a fire starts, speed is everything. How fast you get out of the house, how fast firefighters arrive, etc. Unfortunately, if homeowners don't have smoke detectors properly installed, smoke and fire damage will occur. In situations where homes have sustained major damage, emergency restoration services can assist in the restoration process. However, installing smoke detectors and replacing the detectors' batteries yearly (as well as replacing the smoke alarms once every ten years) can ensure you are alerted quickly. As a result, your home will be less likely to sustain major damage.

  1. Implement a Plan

If you don’t have a plan, you don’t have a goal. When putting a plan together, don’t forget to plan your “immediate escape”, IE leaving straight from a bedroom as opposed to trying to gather belongings first. Ensuring that you know how to escape from other areas of your house can also be helpful, however, since you don’t know where you will be if a fire starts.

  1. Frequently Practice Your Plan

Practice makes perfect, and this is something you will definitely want to have down to a science. As you practice your plan, you will likely be able to identify potential problems that may occur in the event of an actual fire. Practicing often can help you feel confident in your ability to safely exit your home.

If a fire occurs in your home, reacting in a timely and safe manner can be invaluable. SERVPRO of Hesperia / Apple Valley is here to help once you have safely escaped.

Fire Damage Clean-up

2/18/2020 (Permalink)

Fire damage to a house poses issues beyond the obvious. The flames leave behind charring, smoke damage to the structure and contents, and in major cases, water damage from fire fighting efforts to put out the fire.

One of the most challenging situations a Hesperia / Apple Valley homeowner can experience is fire damage. Billowing smoke coats surfaces quickly, and charring results in structures being unable to be restored.

Tear-Out of Fire Loss

One of the first steps is to remove charred building materials. Ruined door frames, and insulation that has taken on smoke damage all require removal and disposal. SERVPRO technicians carefully remove these items, usually leaving only the studs and framing supports.

Cleaning of Smoke Residues

The remaining smoke-damaged areas are cleaned with SERVPRO-exclusive chemicals, specially designed for situations like structure fires. For stubborn residues such as wet smoke (created by burning plastic or rubber), solvent-based cleaners are usually required to lift the smoke and clean the affected surface.

Air Quality Measures

SERVPRO techs concentrate on the removal of airborne particulate matter, like soot and ash. They use air scrubbers fitted with HEPA filters to capture such matter. This assists in improving air quality and also reducing foul odors that typically arise from structure fires.
